A Partial Indulgence

A partial indulgence means that a portion of the temporal punishment due to forgiven sin is remitted i.e. the suffering of a holy soul in Purgatory is reduced.

Partial indulgences are received either by doing some act to which a partial indulgence is attached (as per list below), or by the incomplete fulfillment of the conditions attached to a plenary indulgence.

Partial indulgences are available any time of the year, and as many a day as you like.  You do not need the same conditions as for a plenary indulgence.  A Partial Indulgence is still very important and much easier to acquire – it relieves a Holy Soul of some (partial) of their suffering in Purgatory.  Remember…..a Partial Indulgences can be applied as many times a day as you like.

Just offer up one of the below to gain a partial indulgence for a Holy Soul, and they are relieved of some of their due temporal punishment.  The good news is that you probably already do a lot of the below, so just offer them up each day for a holy soul.

– Make the sign of the cross and say in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit (and offer it as a partial indulgence for a Holy Soul)

– Say the Memorae (and offer it as a partial indulgence for a Holy Soul)

– Say a Hail Holy Queen (and offer it as a partial indulgence for a Holy Soul)

– Say the Angelus (and offer it as a partial indulgence for a Holy Soul)

– Say a Rosary by yourself (and offer it as a partial indulgence for a Holy Soul)

– Say the Magnificat (and offer it as a partial indulgence for a Holy Soul)

– Do the Stations of the Cross (and offer it as a partial indulgence for a Holy Soul)

The above can all be found in The Enchiridion of Indulgences given by the 1968 Decree of the Sacred Apostolic Penitentiary.  In the Apostolic Constitution The Doctrine of Indulgences of January 1, 1967 we read: “Holy Mother Church has then deemed it fitting, in order to give greater dignity and esteem to the use of indulgences, to introduce some innovations into her discipline of indulgences and has accordingly ordered the issuance of new norms.”

  1. Dear Patrick,

A plenary indulgence means that by the merits of Jesus Christ, the Blessed Virgin Mary and all the saints, the full remission of the temporal punishment which due to forgiven sins is obtained, in other words, when we confess our sins, our sins are forgiven, but we still have temporal punishment due in purgatory. After the plenary indulgence, the person becomes as if just baptized and would fly immediately to heaven if he died in that instant, but the indulgence can also be offered up for a named holy soul.

A Plenary Indulgence essentially frees a holy soul from Purgatory or you can use for yourself. Remember all your good deeds, charity, prayers etc also “chip away”, at your due “temporal punishment” in Puragatory. God gives us every chance.

We can only obtain one Plenary Indulgence a day, but as many “partial indulgences” as we want, and the plenary indulgence can be offered up either for yourself, or offered up for a NAMED Holy Soul. Indulgences cannot be applied to another living soul. There are certain acts we can perform to obtain one, but we must also meet certain conditions. See below:

    Acts
    – Offer up a community Rosary (2 people or more) for a plenary indulgence
    – Offer up a half hour of adoration for a plenary Indulgence
    – Offer up a half hour of scripture reading for a plenary indulgence

    4 Conditions Necessary to Fulfill
    1. You must have received the sacrament of confession within 8 days of the offering
    2. You must have complete detachment or detestation of our sins i.e. be sorry for all your sins and not want to sin again..
    3. You must pray for the Pope’s intentions as you do at the beginning of the rosary (our father, 3 hail marys and glory be)
    4. You must receive Holy Communion within 8 days in a state of grace

Therefore, for instance, if you are a daily mass goer, and say the rosary each day before mass with others, and you go to confession once a week, and also have complete detachment and detestation of your sins, you can offer one daily indulgence for a holy soul each day, and it might be worth doing up a list of those you know to have died.
